Marketplaces are in general the real or metaphorical place where commercial exchanges take place comparable to real online supermarkets. In the Italian language, however, marketplaces are used to indicate intermediation websites for the sale of a good or a service; in other words is an online marketplace in which the goods of different sellers or different websites are grouped.

The marketplace differs from the online store because there are usually multiple sellers within it. It is, in some ways, the same difference that can be found between a local store and a shopping center. The marketplace in addition to providing a higher range of products than a single e-commerce, offers the end user greater guarantees during the finalization of the purchase and the subsequent receipt of the purchased product.

In fact, most of the existing marketplaces retain the amount of the order until it is delivered, and then transfer the amount due to the seller, minus the sales commission. In this way, the end user, if he does not receive the product or should receive a package that does not conform to what he purchased, could contact the seller directly, if he knows his contact details or request mediation from the marketplace.
